Motorcycle Insurance: Compare Quotes Nationwide
Motorcycle insurance works like auto insurance but is tailored to bikes — covering liability, collision, comprehensive, and accessories like custom parts, gear, and helmets that standard auto policies don't address.
Get a Motorcycle Insurance QuoteWhat Motorcycle Insurance Covers
Motorcycle insurance covers the damage and injuries you cause to others and, if you add them, your own bike and gear. Most states require liability coverage on a motorcycle just like a car. Because a crash on a bike is more likely to cause injuries, medical and uninsured motorist coverage matter more here than on most auto policies.
- LiabilityInjuries and property damage you cause to others. This is the part most states require.
- CollisionRepairs to your bike after a crash, whoever is at fault, minus your deductible.
- ComprehensiveTheft, fire, vandalism, hail and hitting an animal.
- Uninsured / underinsured motoristYour injuries when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little.
- Medical paymentsMedical bills for you and your passenger after a crash.
- Custom parts + gearAftermarket parts, saddlebags, helmets and riding gear, up to the limit you choose.
What Drives Your Motorcycle Insurance Price
- The bike: type, engine size and value (sport bikes cost the most to insure)
- Your age and riding experience
- Your driving record
- Where you live and where the bike is stored
- Lay-up or seasonal coverage if you only ride part of the year
- Discounts: a rider safety course, bundling with auto, multiple bikes
Each carrier weighs these factors differently, so the same person can get very different quotes. As an independent agency, Signature Insurance compares several carriers for you at once, and we can shop your policy again at renewal.
Motorcycle Insurance FAQ
Is motorcycle insurance required?
Yes in nearly every US state — at least liability coverage. A few states allow you to post a bond instead, but practically speaking you'll want a real policy.
Why is motorcycle insurance often cheaper than auto?
Bikes are usually a secondary vehicle, ridden seasonally and lower miles. Most riders pay $200-600/year vs $1,500+/year for a car. Sport bikes and high-CC engines push premiums up; cruisers and standards are cheapest.
Does my auto policy cover my motorcycle?
No. A motorcycle needs its own policy or a motorcycle added to a policy built for it. An auto policy won't pay for a bike crash.
Can I suspend coverage in the winter?
Many carriers offer lay-up coverage that keeps comprehensive (theft, fire) in place while the bike is stored, which lowers the premium. Keep liability if you might ride on a warm day.
Does a safety course lower my rate?
With many carriers, yes. A certified motorcycle safety course usually earns a discount.
Is my passenger covered?
Your liability and medical payments coverage typically protect a passenger, but limits and exclusions vary by carrier. We'll confirm on your quote.
